BIG NEWS SINCE LAST ISSUE

OTY IS SPONSORING THE 1ST ANNUAL SUPPLY RIDE

One afternoon I received a phone call, “What do you think of the flyer?”  “What flyer?” I asked.  “The one about the Motorcycle Run!”,  “The one OTY is having.”  The caller said calmly.  “WHAT MOTORCYCLE RUN!!!  AND OTY IS DOING WHAT!!!”  I hurriedly open my email to find out OTY is having our first annual Motorcycle Ride to stock up on blankets to send to the troops later this fall.  Now let me tell you, this is the kind of surprise I like out of the OTY Management Team.  Jon Doughman had an idea and he ran with it.  He didn’t call me and say, “Carol, YOU should have a motorcycle run to get blankets.”  NO!! he put it together in his head then put it on paper and ask CJ to help with the computer art work.  They had a very complete outline of how it should run BEFORE I knew anything about it.  I have some great suggestions presented to me about fund raisers but when I suggest they take it, put it together and manage the project somehow that is the end of it.  Jon took the bull by the horns and took his idea and brought it to completion.  Also, you will notice it is named in such a way that this can become a continuing event with different items that we need.

OUR FIRST PACKING DAY AT OUR NEW HOME

As you know we have moved into our new warehouse location.  We are now organized and ready to invite the members to join us for our first packing day.  We are located in the Carriage House behind the big white, 2 story house at 5995 Morrow-Rossburg Rd in Morrow. May I give you a couple of tips please.  There is no A/C so dress in something cool and comfortable.  You will be on concrete so wear you sneakers.  There is a nice picnic table under  a lovely shade tree and the refrigerator if there to put your lunches and drinks in.  We will have water there at all times.  If you and a friend are coming it might be nice to ride together as parking could be limited, at least for awhile.  This is a warehouse, just dressed up on the outside, so wear clothes that can get soiled.  Wear you friendly smile and bring your great attitude and leave your fancy clothes at home.  This is going to be a lot of fun for us and now we have the room to really work and serve our troops to our fullest.  We will all get to know others from the OTY family.  I look forward to see YOU there.  Call me if you have questions.

DIRECTIONS

US 22/3 into Morrow.  Turn RIGHT into Houston (car lot on corner – across from Funeral Home)  LEFT into Highlawn then RIGHT into Welch (4-way  stop) pass the church and school turn RIGHT into Morrow-Rossburg Rd.  Probably ½ mile on RIGHT look for gravel road turn into it and come past the pond to the gray building behind the white house.

OUR STORES CAN USE YOUR HELP

I would like to thank all of you who have dropped off items at Peoples First Savings Bank and at the Family Dollar Store in Morrow.  You have helped to rebuild our stock items.  There is still a big need for such items as socks, toothpaste and toothbrushes, disposable razors, tuna and chicken foil packets, and as always Beef Jerky (lots of Jerky) and drink mixes and power bars.  All of a sudden we have gotten requests for these personal care items.  Also, we have added some female soldiers so we need items for them as well.  We have several who organize sock drives at their churches, and you may be doing this and just have not told me.  I look forward to hearing from you.

UPDATE ON SOME OF OUR SOLDIERS

This is from the family of Daniel Thornhill wounded a couple of months ago when his vehicle hit an IED.  Daniel lost both his legs and was badly burned.  He has been in ICU all this time.

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for your prayers, support and concern.  Daniel is doing better.  He had a shower the
other day and is eating more of his food.  Daniel's voice is sounding stronger each time we talk
to him.  He is getting physical therapy training for his arms and shoulders and has started "trunk" training in the gym to strengthen his upper body.  That is so Daniel will be able to move himself from one spot to the next.  He is still in the healing process, but he is healing.  Praise the Lord!
Thanks again for everything.  Have a great day!

Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2008
Daniel is doing better all the time.  He did have a little more skin grafting on his right hand, but all the other bandages and wound vacs have been removed.  He now has a wheelchair and has been given hospital privileges.  This means Daniel is able to go to the cafeteria for his meals, can go outside and can visit with other patients.

Some good news - within the next month or so Daniel will be moved to a VA Hospital in Richmond, VA that specializes in spinal cord injuries.  That also means he won't be so far away.

Thank you all for your prayers, concern and support.

Doug and Cheryl

Sgt. Josh Wells and his wife, Brandi were  in Sandburg, MS with a couple of weeks with his family.  His mother tells me he is coming along fine.  He has his prostheses but when he put some of his weight back on they needing to still work with them to get them comfortable.

Josh has gone over a couple of times to check on Daniel but was unable to see him since he was still in ICU.  He plans to go by and visit with him when Daniel is up to company.  Since their injuries are so similar maybe Josh will be able to help Daniel.  They are both remarkable young men.

1st Sgt. Scott Penkova was home for 2 weeks leave during August.  Jackie Norris and I have the big pleasure of meeting him while he was here.  Jackie attended the 810th QM Co. picnic and had time with he and his wife, Melissa.  I have the honor of having dinner with them one evening.  He is a great guy and so funny.  Don’t know when I have had so much fun.  He is about half way through his tour – due home in March.  Everyone will have the chance to meet the entire unit, all 19 of them.  He said they will all be at the luncheon.  That’s 18 good looking men in uniform to hug on.  Their Lt. is a female so the guys will have some eye-candy also.

Timmy Finney, from Enon left Iraq August 21 to return home after a year.  He is looking forward to the end of his enlistment in about 6 months.  He is active duty Army.  He plans to return to the area.  Tim was the first of our soldiers to write to our new MySpace site.

Our friend Sgt. Jake Peck is preparing at Ft. Dix to return to Iraq in a couple of months.  Many of you were able to meet Jake at the luncheon.  This will be the second time we have worked with him during his deployment.

There has been a change in the staff at the Qatar hospital.  Major Elizabeth Colon has finished her tour and been replaced by Major  Edna Rolling.  All letters to the wounded soldiers there should now be addressed to Maj Edna Rolling  at the address you already have.

BAKE OFF BEING HELD FOR TROOPS

Another case of someone with an idea and running with it.  Becky Snodgrass, of Mason,  is inviting her friends over for a party – A Bake Off – and the troops will enjoy their rendering.  They plan to bake in bars so they will hold together better in shipping.  The bars will be placed in individual boxes then shipped to our contact to share with his/her unit.  The troops really enjoy getting homemade items.  It beats the store bought things we send them all the time.  I plan to drop by that day to check things out.  Well, someone has to be in charge of Quality Control.  I have to be sure they are good enough for our troops.  Thanks, but I won’t need any help with this job.  J  Thank you Becky for taking your idea and running with it.

ARE YOU NEW TO OTY?

Do you have a Kroger Gift Card that is registered to OTY?  OTY has a Gift Card that you can use when you shop at Kroger and add 4% of what you load onto the card to pay for your gas and groceries.  This 4% does NOT come out of the money you load onto the card.  Kroger donates the money to OTY monthly of the accumulated total of everyone using the card.  In other words – you are shopping for the troops every time you shop for your groceries or gas.

If you need a card contact me and I’ll send you one or a dozen for your friends and family.  There is no charge for the card but the only place you can get them is from me.  The secret to these cards is to keep RELOADING the card.  The more you RELOAD the larger our checks will be.

Do you belong to a club or organization that might like to learn what OTY is all about?  Tell the program chairman about us and see if they would like to invite me in to tell them about OTY.  I do not charge to be a guest speaker.  OK, if there is a meal I’d appreciate being fed but other than that my appearance is FREE.  I just tell the stories of sending specially requested items.  I do not beg for money or support.  Of course, I hope to build their interest but I leave that up to the club.  Give the program chairman my name and information.  I will appreciate your help.
